 Smoke-free hospital

Combating tobacco consumption is a WHO public health priority and a criterion for hospital accreditation from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organisations (JCAHO) in many countries. Present legislation in Spain permits smoking in healthcare centres only in designated areas (Decrees 20/85 and 10/91). Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau has joined the Smoke-Free Hospital Project which promotes a smoke-free workplace and fosters the smoke-free message among the population.

What is a smoke-free hospital?

A smoke-free hospital is a centre participating in a project to create a smoke-free workplace with the commitment of all staff and patients.

The objective is:

To protect and promote the health of users, visitors and workers at the centre.

Why a smoke-free hospital?
  • To protect employees’ health and ensure a safe, healthy working environment.
  • To support smoke-free campaigns to promote health and prevent illnesses caused by smoking.
  • To meet the increasing demands of non-smokers and support public opinion on policies to control smoking.
  • To comply with present legislation prohibiting smoking in hospitals.
